Chains to Gains is a musical production telling the story of the African slave’s horrendous journey from Africa to the American colonies and the hardships and suffering they endured once they arrived.
Chains to Gains tells how the African slave was able to find hope and solace in singing spiritual songs (Negro Spirituals), hymns and psalms that produced what we celebrate today as Gospel music. It is a celebration of Hope over despair and triumph over tragedy.
Advancing Black Arts in Pittsburgh
The Pittsburgh Foundation and The Heinz Endowments are committed to supporting a vibrant cultural life in the region that reflects diverse cultural offerings that appeal to the widest array of the region’s citizens. This nationally recognized grant opportunity is designed to help build careers and support the lives of artists; bolster community awareness of the rich history and current presence of excellent black arts presentation and production; increase professional network opportunities between artists and the Festival; alleviate prohibitive social and economic barriers for artists who otherwise meet Festival requirements; and produce quality art projects to enhance the Festival experience for all. This year, several artists were awarded Festival Support Grants and will appear throughout the Festival—in the Artist Market, on stages, and with art installations and exhibitions.
