Jennyjen42, is a unique line of handmade gifts that are fresh, practical, and have a fun sense of spirit and nostalgia. The one woman business began a decade ago by Jennifer McBrien.
The “Jenny” of her business name refers to her childhood self. The cut felt birds and fabrics that play with whimsy as well as the “Vintage Inspired” organic cotton fabrics reminist her playful and creative upbringing.
The “jen” of her business is the serious birder, observer, and craftsperson that proves her knowledge of the natural world and her proof of hard work in her observational drawing and sewing skills.
McBrien is a painter turned textile artist who has discovered her mark making art which comes alive when using her sewing machine that she uses as a drawing tool, not a computer program. She sees her subjects come alive with intensity and personality. Her subjects tend to speak of her observations of the natural world that tend to get ignored: the birds that inhabit her urban home, and edible plants that are commonly mistaken as weeds. Her bird portraits feel like family portraits that can be arranged to create a narrative of subtle expressive reactions and silent dialogue. Each portrait is created freehand on the sewing machine. Drawing each mark, value, and detail by manipulating the canvas under the moving needle. Each has a final result of a line drawing but with a more labor intensive method that she chose as a dedication towards their preservation.
All products are made with McBrien’s own patterns and original designs. All one at a time. Most of her work has a functional component that also relate to the nostalgic aesethetic of its design. She has choosen to keep her business small and sustainable with small batch, high quality, and eco-friendly materials and production.
